Strawberry Jellies Ration Bag

Strawberry Jellies Ration Bag

170g ration sweets bag filled with strawberry shaped and flavoured jellies. This bag contains approx. two weeks of the sweet rations allowance in 1945.

During the Second World War, sugar rationing limited sweet production but treats like jellybeans and jelly babies remained popular, offering comfort during difficult times. With limited resources, sweets were often adapted by offering smaller portions or using alternative sweeteners.

During the war, strawberries were not subject to rationing, though they were not always readily available. While fruit like apples, pears, and raspberries could be grown in Britain and were sometimes available, imported fruits were scarce. Men returning from duty or sailors in dockyards sometimes had strawberries to sell, though at a high price.
