During the First World War Britain was heavily reliant on food imports from the United States and Canada. To target this important lifeline, Germany, in 1917, introduced unrestricted submarine warfare in the Atlantic. The sinking of huge numbers of merchant ships bound for Britain soon caused drastic shortages in staple foods, such as bread, and led to food price rises.
In response, the British government initially introduced a voluntary rationing scheme, issuing posters such as this one, that encouraged self-restraint in food consumption.
