HMS Belfast was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1939 just before the outbreak of war although its service nearly came to an end in November 1939 when it detonated a German mine. Repaired and modernised, from 1942 it operated in support of the Arctic Convoys, took part in the Battle of North Cape in December 1943 and then took part during D-Day landing. Now HMS Belfast is docked in the Pool of London as a visitor attraction and London landmark.
